Bathtub Installation is one of those projects that can be very time consuming if you don’t do it right. Here are a few tips on doing a Bathtub Installation yourself. The process is basically the same for any kind of bathtub, but you may want to have a professional install yours if you’re not an experienced do it your selfer.
Bathtub Installation Subfloor Preparation Use super glue or a good old hammer to pull the old slab out from underneath the new tiling. Nail the tiling to the joist’s underlayment. In this instance I used 3/4 inch plywood because it was the right height as the old concrete flooring. This should keep water away from the joint. The average cost to replace a bathtub and surround with a built in shower is about $700.
Bathtub Installation – Prepares the Surrounding Walls Make sure that the floor and the wall surrounding the new tub are completely dry. Use heavy duty non slip tape to complete this task. I would highly recommend renting or buying non slip mats rather than laying real vinyl mats. An average cost to replace a bathtub and surround with a built in shower is about $700. This includes the labor costs. I would estimate that about two hours of my time are required to complete this project.
Bathtub and Acrylic Tub Installation – With the floor prepped, prepare the pipes for the new bathtub. For the acrylic tub I used new copper pipes that I purchased at a home depot store. For the bathtub the hot and cold water lines will need to be rerouted. If your plumbing is somewhat familiar try using a plumbing supply and repair kit to make this job go as smoothly as possible.
Bathtub and Acrylic Tub Installation – Once you have your walls and piping in place pour the concrete slabs and allow them to set. Jetted bathtubs are a little trickier than regular tubs. The existing concrete slab must be removed and the old drain system cleaned and the old concrete slab ground to provide the base for the jetted bathtub. Once the old slab has been removed and the base concrete slab prepared to pour the new acrylic bathtub material mix into the drain pipe and allow it to set. Allow the material mix to set for at least six hours.
Bathtub and Acrylic Tub Installation – The average cost to replace a bathtub and acrylic surround is about $700. This includes the labor costs. If you are replacing an older bathtub then the cost will obviously be much less but you have to consider that bathtubs are built with a built-in rubber mat. If you choose to use an ordinary vinyl mat instead then the bathtub and acrylic bathtub installation will cost you an average of about two hundred dollars.
